Dancer Descending Staircase by Jylian Gustlin

Jylian Gustlin

  • Jylian explores the relationship between colours, patterns, and lines to further enhance the sense of movement and rhythm in “Dancer Descending Staircase”. The figure’s dynamic pose is infused with energy as it emerges into the foreground, light but grounded; joyous but disciplined.

Dancer Descending Staircase is a signed and numbered Certified Limited Edition of 25 Elegraph prints.

For the project "Art Living Between the Digital and Tactile Worlds," alta digitized three 36” x 24 hand-painted acrylic backgrounds and five figures. Differentiating from her traditional body of work, each figure is a free-form textile art piece. Combining the figures with backgrounds through digital collage created a series of 5 textured Elegraph™ Prints, each an edition of 25.

The series is also available as Elegraph-D artwork NFT editions of 10 and the Dancer Descending Staircase Elegraph-D artwork NFT can be purchased via our Mintable store for 1.25 ETH.

    • Certified Limited Edition of 25 Elegraph™ prints.
    • Printed on aluminum panels using the highest quality archival inks
    • Elegraph™ print size: 36" x 24"
The artist's decision is to display the edition unframed. Each Elegraph print is mounted with a custom-designed secure wall hanging system to ensure prints are level and flush to the wall while adding strength and stability.

THE STORY BEHIND GUSTLIN'S ELEGRAPH PRINTMAKING PROJECT

When artist Jylian Gustlin connected with Roland dela Cuesta, alta’s Head of Art Production, they already had one thing in common: a background in technology and art. With her studies in math and computer science continuing to inform her art practice, Jylian was intrigued by the ability of the Elegraph™ textured print process to enable her ‘people’ to emerge from the surface of a work. Roland says: “Jylian is a true collaborator. She threw her faith into the technology.”

True to her body of work, Jylian created three high-relief, colourful backdrops on canvas, the Elegraph™ print plates, layering a variety of materials to create a dynamic environment for her abstracted figures. The alta printmaking team scanned each canvas, meticulously capturing the artist’s surface relief and vibrant colours with an ultra-high-resolution colour laser scanner. Jylian then created five free-form fabric figures using quilting techniques she employs in her textile art. The alta team scanned the figures, digitally capturing the intricate texture and pattern of each fabric and the threads of the stitching.

With the same collaborative process as a traditional print studio, Jylian worked with the alta printmaking team who digitally sculpted the quilted figures to provide musculature and human form, overlaying and having them emerge from the painted surface. This digital creativity was in no way foreign to Jylian as she uses both two-dimensional computer design and three-dimensional computer modeling programs to sketch the character and movement of her people.

This compelling series of original Elegraph™ prints is a natural extension of Jylian's creative practice; a literal collage of modern print technology and two distinct physical mediums forging the colourful, complex layered textures for which she is so well known.

Jylian has also taken advantage of the ultra-high-resolution data sets created during the alta process to simultaneously launch a series of Elegraph-D artworks available as NFTs. These are created directly from the high-quality data files captured from the creative analog components of her textured print series, and truly bring her figures to life in their dynamic backdrops. The series of 5 Elegraph-D artwork NFTs, each an edition of 10, will be available through Mintable.

ABOUT JYLIAN GUSTLIN

Jylian Gustlin is a native Californian and grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area. Her work has been shaped by classical figurative art and the technology of Silicon Valley. She uniquely incorporates all of those influences along with the natural, vibrant colors gleaned from her long runs in the oceanside hills near her home.

Jylian uniquely combines the effects of modern technology with traditional techniques. While painting in acrylic and oil paints, her artwork often conveys the same complex layered effects possible in computer programs.

Human figures have always been an important part of her repertoire. Her characters are frequently set in an alien-like landscape, moody and brooding, yet at the same time, depicting a sense of future. She has been influenced by a lifelong love of the Bay Area Figurative artists.
