JYLIAN GUSTLIN

Jylian Gustlin is a native Californian and grew up in the San Francisco bay area. Influenced by both the technology explosion of Silicon Valley, and a lifelong love of the Bay Area Figurative artists, she combines traditional oil and acrylic technique with computer modelling to sketch the character and movement of her human figures. Jylian was intrigued by the ability of the Elegraph™ textured print process to enable her ‘people’ to emerge from the surface of a work. And, she is excited to be our first artist to simultaneously drop an Elegraph™-D artwork NFT edition series.

The Collaboration: Jylian Gustlin x alta

Watch the Story Unfold

A collaborative process

True to her body of work, Jylian created three high-relief, colourful backdrops on canvas, layering a variety of materials to create a dynamic environment for her abstracted figures. The alta printmaking team scanned each canvas, meticulously capturing the artist’s surface relief and vibrant colours with an ultra-high resolution 3D colour laser scanner.

Jylian then created five free-form fabric figures using quilting techniques she employs in her textile art. The alta team scanned the figures, digitally capturing the intricate texture and pattern of each fabric and the threads of the stitching.

With the same collaborative process as a traditional print studio, Jylian worked with the alta printmaking team, who digitally sculpted the quilted figures to provide musculature and human form before overlaying the figures so they appear to materialize from the painted surface.

Between the digital and tactile — where those two meet is where something new happens.” - Jylian Gustlin

Creating a connected series of physical and digital art

Creative digital iteration enables a beautiful flowing, connected series of works. By combining different figures with different backgrounds, Jylian was able to create a series of 5 editions, with 25 prints per edition. This compelling series of original Elegraph™ prints is a natural extension of Jylian’s creative practice; a literal collage of modern print technology and two distinct analog mediums forging the colourful, complex layered textures for which she is so well known.

Jylian has also taken advantage of the ultra-high-resolution data sets created during the alta process, and simultaneously launched a series of related digital video works available as Elegraph™-D artwork NFTs. These are created directly from the high-quality data files captured from the creative analog components of her textured print series, and truly bring her figures to life in their dynamic backdrops. The series of 5 Elegraph™-D artwork NFT editions of 10, are available through Mintable.
